Volunteer Opportunities
Children in Families is primarily staffed by Cambodian workers, and places a very high value on local staff working with local people.
Children in Families does accept foreign volunteers to support the work of local staff through technical advisory roles, or through administrative and other support positions.
Except in very rare cases, foreign volunteers do not work directly with clients, whether children or families. The only exceptions to this might be in cases where a volunteer’s specialist knowledge must be delivered to a client in person: for example, where a medical specialist meets directly with a client to treat a health need. Instead, foreign volunteers support CIF’s Cambodian staff to work with their clients.
CIF places a high value on contextualisation and communication in Khmer, the local language. Though short term volunteer placements are of course in English, CIF encourages all foreign volunteers to learn at least some Khmer.
There are several options in Phnom Penh for learning language, and volunteers can use some of their work hours for this purpose.
